Linoleum Flooring
Linoleum is made from linseed oil, wood/cork powder, and rosin. It's dent and moisture resistant, and easy to install and maintain. This type of product can be made with all-natural products, recycled products, and benefits from having anti-bacterial and anti-allergenic properties.
Be sure to find real linoleum, and not vinyl tiles, which are sometimes incorrectly called linoleum. Also, while linoleum itself does not emit VOCs, it has to be installed with an adhesive. Look for low- or no-VOC adhesive to maintain healthy air quality in your home.
Linoleum is made from renewable, plant-based materials, does not emit VOCs in the home and is biodegradable at the end of its useful life.
The inspiration for linoleum came to Frederick Walton in England in 1955, when he noticed that a thick, rubbery skin had formed on the top of a can of linseed oil due to oxidation in air. He speculated that a tough rubber material could be made by speeding up this process. Adding other components and a backing substrate evolved the first versions of linoleum, named after "linum," which means "flax" - the seed that linseed oil is made from, and "oleum," for "oil."
