A gas range is a cooking range (stovetop and oven) fueled by natural gas or propane. Gas ranges cook quickly and effectively with a short startup time, and they still operate when the power goes out.

Often, premium models will come with larger burners capable of putting out more heat, which may be unnecessary for regular cooking. They can also have electronic controls for programmed cooking times so that the burners will automatically shut off, increasing safety and potentially saving energy.

Gas ranges typically have lower efficiencies (~40%) compared to electric ranges (70-80%). However, they can have a lower or higher carbon footprint than an electric range, depending on how low-carbon your electricity supply is. The down side of gas ranges is that they release the products of combustion into your home, so it is advisable to have a range-hood installed over the range.

In England in 1826, James Sharp patented a gas stove and started a factory to produce gas stoves in 1836. Gas was available in many cities and towns in England by the 1880s, leading to the rising popularity of gas stoves.
